Campus A Low Hum 2010

I got my first real freelance job right before Thanksgiving. I was asked to design a flyer for this music festival in New Zealand called Campus A Low Hum. You can read more about Campus/A Low Hum here.

Anyway, without further adieu, here is my poster. It's loosely based on some scenes from the video and the overall vibe I got from watching it. I was really honored and excited to do this poster because I feel like it's something I can really stand behind and support. Since I moved up in to the warehouse, we've all been working really hard to turn it in to something special, a positive place where people want to go. This dude is doing what we're trying to do and I really dig that. Anyway, I really like how it turned out, so hopefully they ask me to do more in the future...

Just finished a new flyer for our show on Friday. I like how it turned out, despite numerous setbacks. Firstly, two bands dropped, including my headliner, so I sort of feel silly putting them up around town. Also, I made a really really really stupid mistake. Always doublecheck your spelling, kids. This was my first time using a stabilo pencil to make my positives. I really like the texture it created. 4 color screenprint on 11ish x 17ish french paper.

Here's a sketch I was working on for an upcoming show at our house. The speech bubbles are going to contain the supporting acts, but that still needs to be finalized. Hopefully, soon, because I'm excited to start printing again. Or rather, printing my own things.

I scanned the whole page so everyone can see all my personal notations and suggestions and revisions. Kind of thought someone might find it interesting. I have bizarre work habits. I don't really document my process enough, so it will be neat to compare my final print with this original sketch.

I figured I'd update with something old and something new.

My roommate is publishing a book for one of his professors and he asked if I could do a cover for him. The book is titled "Life in a Horse Opera". This is from the beginning of the summer.

Sire is participating in the Philadelphia Open Studio Tours and I was asked if I could draw a quick comic for the occasion. Guests will come and get to screenprint their own poster, add their own dialogue and color it in. If you're free, come stop by on October 4th. Sire is located at the Cedar St studios at Cedar and Allegheny.

Nose Go Toy Release at Jinxed

I was asked to do a custom version of Nose's vinyl toy for it's release show at the new Jinxed the other week. The show was awesome, as was the turnout. I wish I grabbed some pictures of the opening, but here are a few pictures of my version:

I'll be moving in to a huge warehouse in Fishtown with about eight of my friends in a few weeks. We're in the process of cleaning it up now and making it livable. It has a ton of potential and I'm really excited to watch it grow and really become something. First step after moving in, setting up a print shop and dark room. Neat. Mike will be building a small recording studio out of his room and we'll hopefully be able to start putting together some shows. Neat. Here are some "before" pictures:

Patterns and Pillows

I bought a yard of fabric off Spoonflower a few weeks ago and made these cat pillows out of it using the pattern I created (see below). Special thanks to my friend Georgia for teaching me how to sew and also letting me use the brown fabric for the backs(Good call). They're about ten inches by ten inches and will be available for sale on my etsy, as soon as the site is back up and running.

Stranded in Lebanon

For those of you unaware, I just recently spent ten days living in a Walmart parking lot in central PA, where I sold fireworks with two of my friends. Long story short, it was an extremely interesting experience and completely worthwhile. I definitely built a lot of character in the week and a half and came away with some good stories, among other things.

I bought one of those recycled paper brown sketchbooks that I've heard so much about. I really liked drawing in it. These are a few of the people I met while I was working for the man:

A couple days in, my bank canceled my debit card without warning me because someone lifted my numbers from the Walmart. Jose and I had to drive almost two hours the following day to get to my nearest bank, so I'd have more than two dollars for the rest of the "trip". We got lost a few times and stopped in on a townie bar to get directions. These people were super helpful. The tall guy had no lower jaw, but his moustache did a good job of obscuring it.

There are a lot of pregnant people in the suburbs.

These guys were great. They were having a party on Saturday night and invited us to come hang out. They also promised us "tons of pussy" and tried to sell us a variety of drugs, if we were interested.

This guy let us try these new poppers he bought in the Poconos. They were pretty awesome. I think he was trying to sell them to us, but we were too oblivious.

This woman sold fireworks before and assured us that we'd make a killing and gave us tips on how to rip off customers on the fourth(we didn't). She also set off some of the fireworks she bought in the parking lot after leaving. Yay!

Anyway, I'll be updating more frequently again, now that I'm back in civilization, so make sure to check back! Time to get back to addressing my promo mailers! Yay!

Independent Study Project

I took an Independent Study this past semester with my screenprinting teacher, Marisha Simons, and made this book. It is 9 spreads (20 pages total) printed front and back, 5 colors, in an edition of 30 on French's paper. The title was printed with a linoleum block, in two runs, because I didn't like the original M, and it was an afterthought (whoops). It was more work than anything else I'd done the entire year, but I feel like I learned more by doing it than anything else I've done all year. Enjoy. Also, last night was the release party for the fourth volume of 4000 flavors, a zine my friend Sean has been steadily pumping out. I've got two pieces in the latest issue.

So close I Can Taste It

Last night, after an all day print-a-thon, I essentially finished all the work I have to do as a college student. I officially finish on Thursday, and I still need to assemble my book/portfolio, but man, does it feel good to be "done"

Speaking of my book, I stitched together my first one, to present to my teacher, and I'm extremely impressed with myself. Sure some of the registration is off and I botched some of the printing, but holding the final object in my hands, after laboring and staring at it for the last two months, felt... great.

Finished project aside, the whole experience was extremely rewarding, despite the work. Printing was a great release and escape from my work on the seventh floor. For the first time in awhile (ever?) I really feel like I'm walking away from a "class" having truly learned something. Sure I made mistakes, but I impressed myself with my print quality and efficiency. I'm a much more confident printer than I ever was and that's great, considering it's something I'd like to continue doing after college, for financial gains.

This project also got me extremely excited about making books. I've already got ideas for my next one. More on that later. Hopefully, it will be my summer pet project...

The only downside is that two months of pretty intense printing have WRECKED my screens. I need to do some major screen maintenance/dehazing. I'm pretty sure the only screen without a tear in it now is the piece of crap I bought back in high school. Go figure. I think I might just consider getting them all restretched it it's not too expensive.

I wish I would have taken some in progress shots, but alas, hindsight is twenty/twenty. Pictures of the final to come as soon as I finish assembling them! In the meantime, please enjoy this revised/digital version of my Phillies' Riot print.

The Subconscious Art of Graffiti Removal

A few years ago, while driving underground on our way out of the Philadelphia, a friend of mine and I began discussing the city's attempts at removing the graffiti from the tunnels and how painting over it was merely anti-graffiti graffiti. We came to the conclusion that we could easily go around painting colored squares on walls as our "tag", and no one would know the difference.

Fast forward to last semester, when I stumbled across this short film by Matt McCormick. It's called the Subconscious Art of Graffiti Removal and does a much better job than I did at analyzing the same anti-graffiti efforts.

Taken from his website, the plot is described as "Emerging from the human psyche and showing characteristics of abstract expressionism, minimalism and Russian constructivism, graffiti removal has secured its place in the history of modern art while being created by artists who are unconscious of their artistic achievements.

It is no coincidence that funding for “anti-graffiti” campaigns often outweighs funding for the arts. Graffiti removal has subverted the common obstacles blocking creative expression and become one of the more intriguing and important art movements of our time. Emerging from the human psyche and showing characteristics of abstract expressionism, minimalism and Russian constructivism, graffiti removal has secured its place in the history of modern art while being created by artists who are unconscious of their artistic achievements."

Anyway, his theory is really interesting to me and I think the documentary is worth watching, so I figured I'd dig it back up and post it for everybody that wasn't aware.

As the semester winds down and I prepare to graduate, I can't help but feel that these last two weeks are more brutal than the past seven semesters have been. The increasingly nicer weather has proven to be a welcome/unfortunate distraction from my work. I say keep the April Showers around, at least until I'm caught up.

On the subject of avoiding my responsibilities, I've decided to take a break from painting and finally get around to putting up pictures from our thesis show. Sometimes, the best way to get something done that you've been putting off is to have something you want to do even less.

Hello Internet.

Sorry for the lack of updates, but the weeks leading up to graduation have been hectic and stressful, with little time for me to devote to blogging.

The Ely, our senior thesis show, came down yesterday. I wish hanging it was as easy as disassembling it. The show was really great and I was super proud of everyone who placed. I'll post a few pictures in my next update, most likely, but for now it's time to shift gears into portfolio mode.
